That said, we were very pleased to learn about recent articles published on Global News and Forbes that exhibits studies using CBD on treating COVID-19 conducted by research teams at the University of Waterloo and Oregon State University.

The research team at the University of Waterloo found that cannabidiol “appears to prime the innate immune system of cells, potentially offering protection against pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2”. The study was led by Lead Investigator Prof. Robin Duncan, who “discovered that CBD increases the cell’s response to several key proteins produced by the coronavirus genome”.

In addition to this, Richard van Breeman and his team of researchers from Oregon State University, found that “compounds in cannabis can prevent infection from the virus that causes COVID-19 by blocking its entry into cells”. Although this was an in-vitro study, meaning this was not performed on humans or animals, they discovered that the compounds with the most potential in blocking the actions of the virus were CBDA and CBGA specifically.

CBDA and CBGA are the acid forms of cannabinoids cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). Although these acids are likely to be in Full-Spectrum hemp extract consumer products, they only exist in trace amounts and does not mean our products treat, cure, or prevent COVID-19.

Even though this is still in the early stages of research, we look forward to learning more about how hemp compounds may help in the battle against COVID-19 and diseases in general.
